Israel's response to Iran drone and missile attacks

 NEWSLINE PAPER
,- The Israeli military reported a remarkable success rate in intercepting the missiles and drones launched by Iran overnight, with 99% intercepted before reaching their targets. Iran claimed the assault was retaliation for a deadly attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria two weeks prior.

The response from Israel in the aftermath of this attack will significantly shape the direction of the conflict. While some regional and international actors, even those critical of Iran, have called for restraint, Israel has vowed a "significant response," reflecting its reputation for firm stances in the face of threats.

Now, Israel faces critical decisions about how to proceed. One option is to exercise "strategic patience," heeding the advice of neighboring countries and refraining from immediate retaliation. Instead, Israel could continue its longstanding strategy of targeting Iran's proxies and military assets in the region.

Alternatively, Israel may opt for a measured response, targeting specific missile bases responsible for the recent attack. However, this could still escalate tensions, marking the first direct Israeli strike on Iranian soil.

A more aggressive approach would involve broadening the scope of retaliation to include targets belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps. Yet, such actions risk further escalation and retaliation from Iran.

Of paramount concern is the potential for involvement of the US, which has military presence across the region. Escalation could draw the US into a full-scale conflict with Iran, with significant implications for regional stability.

The nightmare scenario looms large: a region-wide war with devastating consequences, including the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil supplies. Efforts to avert such a catastrophic outcome are underway, with governments working tirelessly to prevent further escalation.
