Israel Conducts Night Raid on Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital

Israeli forces conducted an overnight raid on the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, reportedly employing tanks and heavy gunfire at the facility.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the operation was targeted and precise, focusing on limited areas within the hospital compound.

According to the IDF, senior Hamas operatives had taken refuge inside the hospital and were using it as a base to launch attacks.

Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic within the hospital premises. In a recorded call shared on a WhatsApp group, one individual described the presence of tanks surrounding the area and the sound of gunfire nearby.

Unverified footage circulated on social media depicted intense gunfire in the vicinity of the hospital.

The Gaza health ministry, under Hamas control, condemned the operation as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.

The al-Shifa hospital has been a focal point in previous conflicts, with Israeli forces having raided it before. In a previous IDF operation in November 2023, a network of tunnels used by Hamas was discovered beneath the hospital.

Hamas, however, denies using medical facilities for military purposes.

In a video message released early on Monday, IDF spokesperson Rear Adm Daniel Hagari stated that the raid was prompted by actionable intelligence requiring immediate action. He assured that the hospital would remain operational during the operation and urged patients and staff not to evacuate.

Evacuation routes were established for displaced individuals seeking refuge at the hospital, with Hagari calling on Hamas to surrender peacefully.

Before the current conflict, al-Shifa hospital served as Gaza's largest medical facility.
